Rooftop gardens reduce air pollution by absorbing smog and chemical elements, which are extremely dangerous both for environment and health. The installation of a garden also helps limiting a phenomenon known as “urban heat island”. This phenomenon is typical of urban areas and consists in a heat wave that moves smog in the air. Furthermore, plants can absorb and process air pollution, eliminating the dangerous elements or storing them in the roof covering. Finally, rooftop gardens maintain stable the ozone presence in the lower levels of the atmosphere. In 2019, the GreenROOF roofing system was among the winners of the Archiproducts Design Award 2019 for the Systems, Components and Materials category.
